I was thinking of starting this new LEGEND series for quite some time. This gives me an opportunity to go further on a wider canvas than Music Director series inspite of the fact that my earlier unfinished MD series has many more composers to cover. I will continue both these series in parallel for now. Pardon me for my slow speed in producing these articles. To me every blog is an article and is an expression of my love for music. I immerse myself into the music of that composer in that period and my thoughts are always on the music created by that favourite legend.
Hello Everybody, My name is Mrs Sharon Sim. I live in Singapore and i am a happy woman today? And i told my self that any lender that rescue my family from our poor situation, i will refer any person that is looking for loan to him, he gave me happiness to me and my family, i was in need of a loan of $250,000.00 to start my life all over as i am a single mother with 3 kids I met this honest. Saraswati Namastubhyam:Lyrics in English+Sanskrit, Meaning in English. Saraswati Namastubhyam is a prayer practiced in the morning prayers in the schools. It is a prayer to Goddess Saraswati, the giver of knowledge and wisdom. Vasudeva Sutam Devam is the most famous Ashtakam of Lord Krishna. This famous Ashtakam is recited on most occasions related to Lord Krishna including Krishna Janmashtami. It is so popular that it is recited regularly in homes and at various Krishna temples. Krishnashray / कृष्णाश्रय.
Whom should I start with in this part 1 of this Legend series? I want to start with a living legend of our time. He is a singer par excellence with a golden voice, writes his own lyrics, and has self composed more than 400 classical songs, and also has created many new raag outside the traditional 72 Melakartha raag. As a musician he has broken the tradition of Carnatic music through innovation and improvisation without losing the foundation. He is also an undisputed genius besides being a prodigy from birth. OK I could think of one and only Dr Balamurali Krishna with all these credentials. As he is famous in both carnatic music as well as in film music in many languages, I am splitting this into 2 Volumes first on his classical gems and the second volume on his contribution in films.
Balamurali lost his mother when he was only 15 days old and was raised by his mother’s sister. He missed all the childhood fun as he did not study in any school beyond a few months. Seeing his interest in music his teacher asked his father to train him in music. At the age of eight he started singing in stage. At the age of 14 he composed songs in all the 72 Melakarta raag.
“I never sing. It is music that sings.” Says Dr Balamurali Krishna
Balamuralikrishna sings one of his most requested hits. Pibare Rama Rasam, composed by Sadasiva Brahmendra and tuned by Balamurali in Raag Ahir Bhairav.

What is interesting in the above song if you notice, is the scenario reminds me of the royal durbar of the past where the musician will sing in front of the King. Here also the Royal Prince of Travancore Rama Varma a musician himself and direct descendant of the Saint Swathi Tirunal who was also the King of Travancore, is sitting(in green shirt) not in a throne but in a chair admiring his guru Balamurali! This prince who is a great vocalist and a Veena player himself is the principal Sishya of Balamurali .

The Prince Rama Varma celebrates his birthday after15 years by inviting his guru of nine years Dr Balamurali to his home. There are 2 sides to Balamurali the one a performer which the world knows and another a composer.Dr Balamurali is a genius composer like our music saints in the past . According to Prince Varma Balamurali’s compositions are like that of Beethoven,Mozart or Thiagaraja and are to be preserved for the future generation .The bond between this guru and shishya is special like the Gurukulam parampara of the past.He makes this function special with a request to his guru by selecting his favourite compositions of his guru on that day.
Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna sings a Krishna Bhajan SHRI KRISHNAAYANU written by Kaiwara Amara Nareyana to his own music. Listen to the melody of the composition.

Here is a rough translation from the telugu language:
When, I wonder, will I be able to taste the sweetness that resides in meditating on Sri Krishna’s name.. When, I wonder, will I be able to firmly visualize the feet of the Guru in my mind.. When, I wonder, will I find out the secret of the ability to keep chanting without fail, the miracles of Madhava.. When, I wonder will I get the chance to partake the ambrosia that comes from reciting the ’Hari’ nama..

Late Pt Bhimsen Joshi with Balamurali
Balamurali was amongst the earliest musicians who tried Jugalbandhi with Hindustani musicians. His first Jugalbandhi was with Pt Bhimsen Joshi at the instance of the Maharashtra Governer who wanted both these legends to sing together. Both of them came to the studio with no idea of what song they are going to sing and with no preparation and sang on the spot .I normally find Jugal Bandhi a fight between two cultures and with both hindustani and carnatic musicians trying to dominate.Well this Jugal Bandhi is so different as both Bhimsen and Balamurali are best of friends. While Balamurali ’s strength is lower octave Pandit is magical at high octave. At every rendering they admire each other but follow up with another googly. Both are genius and legends of our times and when they join in unison in a concert like this it is non stop flow of melody. If at all I got the passion for Abhang it was after listening to Bhimsen. As long as there is no competition between the singers as in this case JugalBandhi is a treat to the music lover.
I would rate this as one of the finest Jugalbandhi if not the best.
I feel sad that Pandit Bhimsen is no more

Today the multiplex audience are ready to accept changes and innovation. The traditional musicians of the past did not like Balamurali singing in films in those time. When Balamurali started singing his own compositions in the concerts, that created a flutter with tradional carnatic musicians in the past.To them singing anything other than that of the musical trinities is against tradition. The critics were with the traditional purists. They could not even accept Swathi Tirunal on the same level like the music trinity and they doubted the compositions of the King too.
“To rigorously follow a so-called tradition is a form of escapism. It curtails progress. It is hard to practically define tradition and nobody knows what it is. People fail to accept things that they don’t know and brand innovations as violation of tradition,” Balamurali says.

He strongly feels in the name of tradition we let stagnation to set in. And those who talk constantly about it are not sticking to it either. “If you are a true traditionalist don’t accept money for concerts.Swaras depends on imagination don’t go by traditional ways .One has to get the broader picture of the raag rather than confining to the set pattern of sangathis. Did sangathis were composed by trinity or added later by the musicians?’

So what’s his definition of tradition? “Style. It varies from person to person. Without it music will be monotonous,” smiles Balamuralikrishna.

Viduva Viduva Ninka Vishnuda Nee Paadamulu, Kadagi Samsaara Vaardhi (Vaaridhi) Kadumuntsu konina..
Meaning ’Even if I maybe drowning in the ocean of worldly issues, I just won’t leave the feetof Vishnu’

This is a composition by Bhadrachala Ramadas, tuned by Balamurali in Shankarabharanam and set to Thisra Gathi Eka Thaalam.Balamurali suddenly asks his students to join him in the concert itself in this composition much to their surprise and delight. watched by Rama varma .If we listen to this composition we can appreciate how he has changed a classical to a format where even a person with no classical background can appreciate.

Balamurali used to create new raag humming without his knowledge and lyrics also would come spontaneously .The ragas like Ganapathi, Sarvashri, Mahati, Lavangi are all created by him. Minimum 5 notes are required in a raga .He composed Mahathi raag first with 4 notes like in ancient Vedas followed by other raag lavangi and sumukham also with 4 notes .He has composed a raag later with 3 notes only.
“Everything I did was deprecated by the media and others. I think I derived my strength from it. There was brouhaha over my singing my own compositions. I wondered why I cannot choose words to express myself. That’s what Tyagaraja did. He described Rama the way he saw him. Ironically many of my works are now being used by musicians and dancers. It’s heartening though. I never expected to reach where I am today. I learnt music without knowing it will one day become my calling.” Balamurali.

When we go to any dance recital the Thillanas could be either that of Lalgudi or that of Balamurali .Thillanas of Balamurali are like Kirthanas and different .He introduced Sangathis in the Thillanasa too. It is amazing to see how much variation he brings in this Thillana
